After Rich Strike pulled off a huge stunner last year, will there be more betting interest in longshots this Kentucky Derby?
Quigley: “Yep I think longshots will be a popular bet. There’s lots of uncertainty because this is a distance most horses running this race haven’t done before and a bigger field means more traffic than these horses have previously raced in. The impact of Rich Strike last year will drive many clients to find their own Rich Strike today.”
Is there one longshot in particular that is worth taking a stab on?
Quigley: “I liked Reincarnate at a +5000 price yesterday, and he’s now down to +1300. This horse would likely be even shorter if Bob Baffert was still training him. He’s crying out for the step up to a mile and a quarter, and I think this distance will suit him.”
Who is your pick to win the 2023 Kentucky Derby?
Quigley: “I’m going with Mage (+1700). He ran a good race at Gulfstream despite a difficult start after losing ground at the gate. He has a great draw today in Gate 8. I feel trainer Gustavo Delgado will have ironed out previous gate issues and Mage will run very close if so.”
